EK Roumald Mono is the monospaced companion to EK Roumald, designed by Erkin Karamemet and released in 2022. Roumald draws from the tradition of 19th-century Scotch and neo-classic types — including Century Extended, originally designed by Linn Boyd Benton and continued by Morris Fuller Benton around 1900.
It is a contemporary interpretation of these Anglo-American gestures, developed using a CNC router with a round drill bit as a virtual drawing tool. The tension between form and counter-form results from differing radii, while the rounded emphasis in counter shapes is derived from ink slurs characteristic of small type sizes in printing.
The mechanical reference lends Roumald a slightly technical quality, while its awareness of original tools allows it to move beyond the expression of its historical ancestors.
