Founded in 2011 and based in Björkhagen, a residential district on the southern edge of Stockholm, Letters from Sweden produces retail and custom typefaces for clients across Sweden and internationally. The foundry was established by Göran Söderström, a self-taught designer who came to type through years of agency work rather than formal training. Tasks his colleagues found tedious, among them vectorising degraded logos and composing long-form text, were where his attention naturally settled.
The first release was Siri, a sans-serif family in eight weights. Trim followed in 2012, constructed from an alphabet by Danish architect and designer Knud V. Engelhardt. Both typefaces established the foundry's early character: precise, considered work with clear historical footing. The retail catalogue has since grown substantially, with over twenty titles.
Custom work is central to the practice. Söderström has produced bespoke typefaces for Acne Studios, Ableton, Alexander Wang, Gucci, Cadillac, VSCO, and The Nobel Prize.
Stockholm-based designer Erik Moberg collaborates closely with the foundry on custom projects, with a specialism in Arabic and multiscript type systems.
The foundry has maintained an active presence in design education through lectures and workshops. In 2023, Söderström received the Berlingpriset, the only Swedish award dedicated to contribution to typographic culture.
