The sans serif typeface ‘Atak’ is meticulously crafted with a focus on its bold weights, establishing a versatile font family that excels across the entire weight spectrum. Drawing inspiration from the dynamic stroke widths of the previously released Plakat Black, Atak serves as a modern evolution rooted in the tradition of European geometric sans typefaces. Plakat Black originated from anonymous woodblock letters discovered at the Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich, forming the basis for a poster series. While it shares similarities with Paul Renner’s Plak, it distinguishes itself with more compact proportions and a wider array of weights featuring angled stroke endings, imparting a powerful and dynamic visual effect. The redesign of Plakat Black has resulted in a typeface that is not only more flexible but also better suited for text applications. Adjustments to proportions, weights, intersections, and counters have created a robust design that maintains clarity at any size. The curves are now more dynamic, offering a contemporary aesthetic that diverges from the characteristics of traditional wood type. Atak’s Black style, with its relatively wide shapes, avoids the pitfalls of a “fake bold” look, resulting in a strong Grotesk family. It includes a comprehensive range of weights from Light to Black. Additionally, Atak introduces alternative letterforms for A, E, F, H, and r, alongside geometric punctuation marks, solidifying its unique identity.
