In 1972, Heidelberg-based designer Erwin Poell created “Poell Outline,” “Black,” and “Shaded,” all based on a strict grid system. Crack is a modern interpretation in the year 2011. The overlapping of elements is applied in a more consistent manner and thereby taken to the extremes. The design itself is modernised by making the letters more roundish. For a clearer display in small point sizes, the rounded counters are slightly expanded. The exaggerated overlapping elements and bold geometric forms introduce a playful dimension, lending the typeface an illustrative, almost figurative quality that offers a sense of wit and visual charm.
