Out of the Dark

Out of the Dark Typefaces is an independent Swiss foundry dedicated to the untold stories of type. Founded by Philipp Herrmann, the project goes beyond designing fonts. It uncovers the cultural, political, and historical layers embedded in letterforms—reviving lost designs, reinterpreting archival material, and challenging conventional narratives in type design. From experimental specimens to deep research projects, Out of the Dark Typefaces approaches type design as a living, evolving practice—one that invites dialogue between the past and present.

Philipp Herrmann studied graphic design at the University of Applied Arts in Zurich from 2002 to 2007. His journey into type design began with a three-month internship at Dalton Maag in London in 2006, followed by a self-taught path, where he designed typefaces primarily through graphic design assignments.

Since its founding in 2012, custom type design has been central to the foundry's work. Key projects include “Ausano Bold” and the “Campari” typeface, both developed in collaboration with Landor Milan, alongside the custom typeface SMG Sans for the identity of the Science Museum Group, created with North Design.

In addition to collaborating with fellow designers, Out of the Dark regularly offers an internship program where interns develop a typeface from scratch, set to be released on Out of the Dark. Highly successful typefaces, such as Blitz Script and Syncro, have emerged from this initiative.
