Plakat Grotesk is based on unnamed woodtype letters found at Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich. The woodtype letters exist in large size only for use on posters. The typeface has some similarities to Plak by Paul Renner. But its design is more compact and reveals more variations of stroke widths, which makes it so powerful and vivid. After designing a series of posters announcing designer talks together with Kurt Eckert on a letter press using the original wood letters of Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich, Philipp Herrmann started to digitise and expand the glyphset in 2010 and made it available free to use. The retail version [2017] is technically optimised and expanded to a Central Europe glyphset — including useful open type features as Case Sensitive Forms for use in ALL CAPS.
