“Le vie d’Italia” was a monthly publication by Touring Club Italiano from 1917 to 1968. Between 1924 and 1933, it expanded under the name “Le Vie d’Italia e dell’America Latina.” Toy draws inspiration from its vibrant title lettering. The unique C_A ligature and the alternate L_A combination inspired the creation of a compact headline typeface, pushing the boundaries of ligature design. With connected script typefaces in mind, Toy’s letters are crafted for extremely tight spacing. Even with significant negative letter spacing, the rhythm remains intact, as the letters seamlessly blend together. OpenType features enhance this effect, offering over one hundred ligatures, contextual alternates, and additional space-saving superior/inferior letter combinations. The design includes letters with small descenders and tightly crafted accents, allowing for exceptionally close line spacing, making it ideal for dynamic and visually engaging typography.
