RAW is one of Philipp Herrmann’s first typefaces. He started the design in 2006 during an Erasmus programme in Lisbon, fascinated by old Portuguese car registration plates—different in shape and material, bearing a variety of similar but not identical typefaces designed by engineers. Ten years later, Herrmann used it for an artist publication by Vittorio Santoro and was struck by its upfront visual power. This prompted him to make it available for retail in 2017 under the name RAW. The retail version is carefully optimised and offers a complete European character set.
